Researchers at PSI’s Centre for Proton Therapy (CPT) in Villigen, northern Switzerland, are investigating whether a short, one-off, high-dose irradiation technique, known as FLASH, is also suitable for proton irradiation. It relies on a precise 3D radiation treatment developed at the institute called spot-scanning.

In a world first, PSI researchers, in collaboration with Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV), have tested the technique on a patient to treat a malignant skin tumour.
With FLASH, a radiation dose rate of up to 1,000 gray per second is applied – around 100 times higher than in usual treatments.
